While it may seem counterintuitive to buy higher quality items because they tend to be more expensive, it can actually save you money in the long run.
For example, I love my Birkenstock sandals. I have three pairs of them now. My mother bought my first ones for me at least 7-8 years ago. While they’re not as pretty anymore, they are still wearable (even if it’s just to run outside to the garden or mailbox). They just won’t fall apart, but that’s because they’re really good quality.
You could spend $100 on Birkenstock sandals and have them for eight years, or you could spend $20 every year for new sandals. However, in eight years, you’ll have spent $100 on the Birkenstocks, and $160 on the cheaper sandals.
While that example may not apply to you, the thought process can. Sometimes buying a better quality item will financially “hurt” up front, but save you over time.
Even if you’re not as worried about money, this can also be the more sustainable option, as it tends to produce much less waste. Higher quality items can also be repaired to further reduce cost and waste.
Higher quality items also tend to have a higher resale value, meaning if you decide to resell the item, you’re more likely to recoup some of your money.
