How To Save Money With Libraries!

Key notes

  • Libraries are great for books, CDs, movies, and TV shows
  • Explore free options/activities through your library
  • Ask your library about activity passes

Libraries are an amazing source! Not only do they have books on various topics, but they also often have CDs, movies, and tv shows that can be checked out. One of the libraries previously near me even had a seed library for gardening! They also have free wifi and computers that can be used by the public too. All for free!

I highly encourage you to explore your local library. Some libraries also do free events (especially during the summer for kids) too! Our local library does a reading program, but also has a foam party, “cardboard creativity” (to see what you can build with screws and cardboard), story time at the park, trivia night, and tie dye shirts!

Some libraries also participate in state programs for activity passes. These passes allow you and your family access certain state parks, museums, and other attractions! Not all libraries participate, so it’s important to check with your local library, but it’s another fun (and free!) idea for your family!

These ideas are not only free (or super low cost), but they get your family outdoors and meeting other families in the area while supporting your library. If you can’t make it to the library, but have a library card and a phone, e-reader, or computer at home, you can also check out the Libby and Hoopla apps. These apps allow you to check out e-books and read them on your device. I love both apps and use them both for reading and audiobooks. They cost absolutely nothing!

If you have someone in your family that struggles with reading, explore topics there are interested in! As mentioned in my other post on free activities, Dr. Ben Carson, a very gifted Neurosurgeon, discusses this in his book, Gifted Hands. His mother made both her boys check out books from the library each week (on anything they wanted) and their grades and confidence skyrocketed! This is a wonderful way to encourage young readers.

There is so much to be said about libraries and the myriad of things they offer. What are you favorite features at your library? Let me know below!
