- Use coupons
- Use loyalty programs (helpful for grocery shopping and fuel)
- Shop sales
- Use cash back apps – fetch and ibotta are great examples
- Negotiate your bills. Call companies and ask for the loyalty department. We use this for cell phone and internet bills to get the best deals. Companies would rather keep you as a customer than try to replace you.
- Turn off lights and unplug unused electronics
- Heat with wood if possible. We have a wood stove and it saves us hundreds of dollars each year
- Thrift and go to garage sales. This tip is especially helpful for kids, they grow out of clothes so fast!
- Consider buying in bulk. This will only work if you pay attention to prices though. Sometimes bulk items are supposed to be a “better deal”, but they’re not.
- Garden! Even if you can only grow a few plants in pots on the patio, you can save money. Plus, it tastes so much better and has better nutrients!
- Preserve food. If you can buy fresh fruit and veggies while in season and then freeze it, that can help save money. You can also can food if you have the proper materials and knowledge.
- Look at local farms for fresh foods. We buy corn, blueberries, and strawberries from different farms each year. U-pick farms can save you a lot compared to pre-picked too!
- Utilize the library!
- If you live in a small town, look for free events. Parades, movies in town, etc. My husband and I used to walk in town and noticed that people were putting little painted rocks (they were ladybugs) throughout down town. We’d make a game of who could spot more!
- Eat leftovers, make food at home. I’m not going to tell you not to buy coffee out or pick up a pizza on the way home, but if you do those things, eat the leftovers.
- Look for deals if you choose to eat out. Coupons or deals can save you a bit when you’re looking for fast food or coffee.
I’m not going to pretend that this is an exhaustive list, because it’s not. It’s just a jumping off point. There are lots of tips to help you save. Future posts will talk more about these tips and others.
