Decluttering
I recently was listening to a post from a social media influencer who is trying to get her family out of debt. She mentioned that her family got rid of approximately 70% of their belongings to simplify their lives and declutter. She made an interest comment that stuck with me. She thought to herself, in the case of a fire, what am I going to grab? Her answer, “seven things, all seven have pulses”.
She’s absolutely right. What am I going to grab if a house fire occurred in my home. My daughter and my husband (and maybe a blanket to keep us from freezing).
That being said, my house is quite small (under 800 sq feet) and it has a stone/dirt/concrete unfinished basement. Even with that small of space, we have far too much stuff. I have been trying to part with stuff, which can be difficult. I lost my mother a few years ago and some of her previous possessions can be hard to let go of. However, just like the influencer mentioned, my stuff will become my kids’ stuff and so on. They don’t need the burden of carting around my junk.
While I do feel like I’ve made leaps and bounds on getting rid of stuff, I have a long way to go. I’m determined to continue my journey of decluttering. Decluttering can help simplify your life and help you see what’s important. It can also help you save money. You can sell your items or even if you donate all of them (or utilize buy nothing groups – see my previous post), but it will help you see what you really need. This will (hopefully) discourage you from spending money on unnecessary items and be more intentional with your decisions. That’s a huge money saver! Plus, if you’re life me, you’ll feel better overall and have more clarity in your life with less stuff.
